window as fast as I could but still got a noseful of dust. I had to roll down the window again to get the food, then I sneezed most of the way home.

:Maddy—what are you doing?:

Sirena sounded groggy.

:Sneezing. I inhaled a bunch of dust. Damn wind.:

:Never stops.: She was on the edge of sleep again.

:Sorry I woke you.:

:Okay. I’m not doing too good.:

“We’re coming for you,” I said. “Don’t lose hope.”

:Hope.: She fell asleep again.

I ate my burger in frustration. Another day gone, and I’d learned nothing about finding Sirena. Tamar was no closer either. I knew I had to find her—I’d known that before that silly Priestess card popped up.

When the doorbell rang it startled me out of near sleep. My shake was long melted and the onion rings stone cold.

Rose and Geri stood on the doorstep.

“What’s up, girls?” I showed them into the kitchen, and they accepted my offer of coffee.

“We did a little research with people who don’t like questions,”

Rose said when we were all settled. “Mike and Ned aren’t wearing khakis, they’re not militia wanna-bes. But if they’re stockpiling electronics, then certain people who are stockpiling other things, well, they usually keep tabs on potential threats.”

“How do you know people like this?”

Geri stared into her coffee. “Rose knows them. I’m still kind of shocked about it.”

“Honey,” Rose said, putting her hand on Geri’s arm. “I told you when we first got together that my past was checkered.” She glanced at me. “Let’s just say for a while I believed that tearing things down was more productive than building them up. Then I got a little too close to one of my own creations, and when I got over the concussion I was seeing pictures in my sleep.”

“Your daddy wasn’t the only one in the family in the IRA?”
